RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-49
A resolution recognizing Davidson County Chancellor Irvin Kilcrease upon his
retirement from service with the Metropolitan Government of Nashville
and Davidson County.
WHEREAS, on September 30, 2003, Chancellor Irvin Kilcrease will officially
retire from service as Chancellor of Davidson County Chancery Court, Part
1; and
WHEREAS, Chancellor Kilcrease has been a lifelong resident of Nashville, attending Tennessee State University and receiving his J.D. from the Nashville School of Law; and
WHEREAS, before becoming Chancellor, he maintained a private practice, was an Assistant Metro Public Defender, and was an Assistant United States Attorney; and
WHEREAS, on September 25, 1980, then Governor Lamar Alexander appointed Attorney Kilcrease to Chancery Court where he became the state’s first Black Chancellor, the office he has conscientiously and stalwartly held until his final court session on September 30, 2003; and
WHEREAS, over the past 23 years Chancellor Kilcrease has presided over numerous cases where he utilized his knowledge, dedication and professionalism, all of which will be sorely missed; and
WHEREAS, Chancellor Kilcrease is known for being fair and tough, and he has followed his principles according to the law when performing his duties, but he is also memorably and fondly known for his quick wit and astuteness when the occasion warranted a lighter moment; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Irvin Kilcrease for his many years of service and commitment to Davidson County, and congratulate him on his well-deserved retirement as Chancellor, with best wishes for many years of happiness and contentment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Davidson County Chancellor Irvin Kilcrease upon his retirement from service with the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Davidson County Chancellor Irvin Kilcrease.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
