RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-48

A resolution recognizing the late George Tolbert.

WHEREAS, on October 19, 2003, family, church members and friends gathered outside the Old Hickory Boulevard Church of Christ along Old Hickory Boulevard and Tolbert Drive in Bellevue for the dedication and the unveiling of a historical marker to honor the late George Tolbert; and

WHEREAS, George Tolbert, a former slave who settled along Old Hickory Boulevard who had bought his own freedom, purchased over 95 acres of land for settlement by cutting, hauling and selling lumber, and helped establish what is now known as the Old Hickory Boulevard Church of Christ; and

WHEREAS, today descendants of the late George Tolbert still reside on this land which became known as Tolbert Hollow, which is one of the oldest settlements of land continuously owned by an African-American family in the state of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the late George Tolbert for his vision, wisdom and hard work.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the late George Tolbert and his descendants.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Tolbert Family.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
