RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-34


A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the appropriate legislation to impose more stringent requirements for the registration of sex offenders and to appropriate the necessary funding to keep the sex offender registry updated.

WHEREAS, Chapter 39 of Title 40 of the Tennessee Code Annotated provides for the registration and monitoring of sexual offenders to protect the safety and welfare of the citizens of the State of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, lax state laws regarding sexual offender registration encourage sexual offenders to relocate to Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, a recent article in The Tennessean reported that 37% of the state’s convicted sex offenders were not in compliance with the state’s registration laws; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is in need of new technology to ensure that the sex offender registry is kept updated

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the safety and welfare of the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County and the State of Tennessee that the Tennessee General Assembly enact legislation imposing more stringent requirements on the registration of sex offenders and appropriate the necessary funding to ensure that the registry is updated on an on-going basis.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:


Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to impose more stringent requirements for the registration of sex offenders and to appropriate the necessary funding to keep the sex offender registry updated.


Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
