SUBSTITUTE RESOLUTION NO. SR2000-309

A substitute resolution expressing support of the Nashville Publishers Co-op’s efforts in installing modular newspaper racks.

WHEREAS, the Nashville Publishers Co-op includes more than 20 local publishing companies who have united in an unprecedented move; and

WHEREAS, these companies represent more than 3,000 local jobs, over $40 million in annual payroll and millions of dollars in tax revenue; and

WHEREAS, the publishers are committed community partners and have taken sincere voluntary steps toward solving the problem of multiple news racks along many of the city’s sidewalks by signing an agreement to remove individual racks and replace them with modular units; and

WHEREAS, the agreement will add 12 new modular units over the next 90 days and many more over the next 18 months; and

WHEREAS, the publishers already have replaced individual news racks with modular units on five of Nashville’s sidewalks; and

WHEREAS, the publishers already have removed more than 102 individual racks from downtown sidewalks; and

WHEREAS, no advertisements will be placed on the publishers’ news racks; and

WHEREAS, the publishers have shown an interest and willingness to work with the arts community regarding the use of public art on the news racks; and

WHEREAS, the publishers have a sincere interest in the future of Nashville and its neighborhoods.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as expressing support of the Nashville Publishers Co-op’s efforts in installing modular newspaper racks.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Nashville Publishers Co-op.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
