RESOLUTION NO. RS99-53

A resolution requesting the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to rescind its approval permitting the recycling of radioactive metals from the Oak Ridge Nuclear Weapons facility.

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has approved an experimental procedure whereby British Nuclear Fuels Limited will recycle metals from the Oak Ridge Nuclear Weapons facility; and

WHEREAS, such metals will be recycled for such everyday items as forks, frying pans, and other metal products; and

WHEREAS, such a program allows the re-introduction of these contaminated metals that have an adverse affect on the general health and safety of the people of the Metropolitan Government and the State of Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVENRMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to rescind its approval permitting the recycling of radioactive metals from the Oak Ridge Nuclear Weapons facility.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
