RESOLUTION NO. RS99-2

A resolution proclaiming October 6, 1999, as "Walk Our Children to School Day" and October 2-10, 1999, as "Walk Nashville Week."

WHEREAS, Nashville schools are now in session and more children are walking to and from neighborhood schools -- many of them during the time of the day when many motorists are rushing to work or heading home after a tiring day at work; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan County Council recognizes the importance of making walking safer in our community for all people, most importantly our children; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of children could be saved each year if every community in America would take steps to make pedestrian safety a priority; and

WHEREAS, parents and caregivers should teach children about pedestrian safety and become aware of the difficulties and dangers that children face on their trip to school each day; and

WHEREAS, children, parents and community leaders are joining together nationwide for "Walk Our Children to School Day" on October 6, 1999, to walk to school and evaluate pedestrian safety in their community; and

WHEREAS, in Nashville, the recognition of Walk Our Children to School Day will be part of a week-long celebration called "Walk Nashville Week;" and

WHEREAS, Walk Nashville Week will include a walk on October 2, 1999, for senior citizens at several the Vanderbilt Kim Dayani Health Promotion Center and several area senior citizen centers, which will be called the "Global Embrace Walk for Active Aging;" and

WHEREAS, the finale for Walk Nashville Week will be Walk to the Titans Game Day on October 10, 1999, when the Tennessee Titans and volunteers will encourage fans to walk to the team’s game that day with the Baltimore Ravens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming October 6, 1999, "Walk Our Children to School Day" in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council further proclaims the week of October 2-10, 1999, as "Walk Nashville Week."

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

AMENDMENT NO. 1

TO

RESOLUTION NO. RS99-2

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS99-2 by amending Section 2 thereof by adding the following sentence:

"The Metropolitan Council Staff is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to representatives of Walk Nashville Week."
