RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1508


A resolution recognizing Celebration of Cultures 2003.


WHEREAS, the 8th annual international Celebration of Cultures will be held the weekend of July 11-12, 2003; and

WHEREAS, Nashville has an increasingly diverse population from a great variety of cultural backgrounds making their homes here; and

WHEREAS, all residents of Nashville are enriched by the myriad of cultures in our community; and

WHEREAS, in a time when race, ethnicity, and nationality are labels used to divide, Scarritt-Bennett Center is living out their mission to be a force for reconciliation and greater understanding; and

WHEREAS, community-wide, broadly based, multicultural advisory and steering committees have conceived of and developed the annual Celebration of Cultures at Scarritt-Bennett; and

WHEREAS, the Celebration of Cultures provides people of all ages with the opportunity to learn about more than 50 cultures through music, dance, crafts, exhibits and food; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Scarritt-Bennett for their continuing efforts to bring people together to share their cultural heritages and learn about others in their community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Celebration of Cultures 2003.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Carolyn Henninger Oehler, President on behalf of the Scarritt-Bennett Center.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
