RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1506


A resolution recognizing Wanda Southerland.


WHEREAS, in May of 2003, Wanda Southerland stepped down as editor with the GCA Publishing Co., Inc; which publishes the Green Hills News, Belle Meade News, West Meade News, West Side News and Nashville Today weekly newspapers; and

WHEREAS, a “newspaper lady through and through” Wanda Southerland initiated groundbreaking changes at the newspaper, including helping move the newspapers toward stronger news content; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure with GCA Publishing Co., Inc., Wanda Southerland served in many capacities from Editorial Assistant, Staff Writer, City Editor then finally working her way through the ranks in becoming Editor in February of 1997; and

WHEREAS, she is actively involved in a number of professional and civic organizations, currently a member of the Society of Professional Journalism and has had several articles published in Christian Woman magazine; and

WHEREAS, through her invaluable efforts with GCA Publishing Co., Inc., and immeasurable contributions to journalism, she has truly made a positive impact on countless lives; Mrs. Southerland’s hard work, commitment, ingenuity, and devotion to her profession will continue to contribute to our state for years to come, and it is indeed most appropriate to pay tribute to her as she begins a new chapter in her life; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Wanda Southerland on her journalistic career and extend to her sincere best wishes for happiness in her future endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Wanda Southerland.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Wanda Southerland.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
