RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-15


A resolution recognizing Dallas Simons for his achievement at the 2003 National Geographic Bee.


WHEREAS, Dallas Simons, seventh-grader at Martin Luther King Jr., Magnet School represented the State of Tennessee on May 20-21,2003, at the 2003 National Geographic Bee in Washington D.C.; and

WHEREAS, over five million students from more than 15,000 schools across the United States participated in this years competition resulting in fifty-five competitors making the finals; and

WHEREAS, in the championship match Dallas Simons forced a tie-breaker round before winning second place and receiving a $15,000 dollar scholarship; and

WHEREAS, this seventh grader’s performance, discipline and determination in this challenging contest reflects his knowledge to learn; and

WHEREAS, when Dallas is not studying geography he enjoys computers, is a member of a local swim team, enjoys basketball and inspires to becoming a National Geographic photographer so he can travel around the world; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Dallas Simons on his accomplishment and wish him the best in the rest of his academic ventures.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dallas Simons for his achievement at the 2003 National Geographic Bee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dallas Simons.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
