RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1504


A resolution recognizing Detective Joe Cooper upon receiving the 2003 Theodore Roosevelt Association Police Award for Nashville and Middle Tennessee.


WHEREAS, Youth Services Detective Joe Cooper is the sixth recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Police Award; and

WHEREAS, this distinguished award was created by the Theodore Roosevelt Association and given annually to a police officer who displays outstanding service to the department and community despite a injury, illness or serious handicap; and

WHEREAS, this award is named for Theodore Roosevelt in recognition of his years as president of the Board of Police Commissioners of New York City (1895-97) and his life long interest in police work and admiration for the police; and

WHEREAS, Detective Joe Cooper joined the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in 1988, as a patrol officer, then spent several years working with the DARE program before joining the Youth Services Division; and

WHEREAS, this recognition has been conferred upon Detective Cooper for outstanding and praise-worthy service to the Metropolitan Police Department, where he returned to his job despite being shot at close range by a teenager skipping school; and

WHEREAS, upon returning to his career Detective Joe Cooper, a 15-year police department veteran, remains on assignment with the Youth Services Division where he continues with the tasks that he had performed with tenacity for many years; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Detective Joe Cooper for his dedication and love of his job in returning back to work in the Youth Services Division.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record recognizing Detective Joe Cooper upon receiving the 2003 Theodore Roosevelt Association Police Award for Nashville and Middle Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Detective Joe Cooper.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
