PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENT #21

Section 18.05 of the Charter of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County shall be amended by deleting the provisions of such section in their entirety and substituting in lieu thereof the following new provisions:

Section 18.05. Change in salary of metropolitan officers. The salary or compensation of the public defender and of administrative and professional officers or employees, including the mayor, and other elected officials whose salary or compensation is fixed by this Charter, except members of council and the vice mayor, may be changed by the metropolitan council and established as part of the general pay plan as provided for in Section 12.10 of this Charter. The salary or compensation of the members of council and of the vice mayor may be changed by resolution adopted by the metropolitan council, which resolution does not require the approval of the mayor. Provided, however, that the salaries of elected officials shall not be increased or diminished during the period for which they shall have been elected.”

FOR THE BALLOT

Amendment No. ____

This amendment would amend Section 18.05 to allow the Council to change the salaries of the members of council and of the vice mayor by resolution adopted by the Council, rather than such changes being a part of the general pay plan for all metropolitan officers and employees approved by the Civil Service Commission and then adopted by the Council as is presently provided.
