RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1452
A resolution proclaiming May 30, 2003, to be “Community Action Day” in
Nashville and Davidson County and commemorating the Metropolitan Action Commission
as the community’s action agency.
WHEREAS, community action agencies were created when the Economic Opportunity
act of 1964 was signed into law; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission was signed into law by Mayor Beverly Briley on August 28, 1964, through Substitute Bill No. 64-312 “AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A METROPOLITAN ACTION COMMISSION FOR THE PURPOSE OF PARTICIPATING IN A RPOGRAM TO MOBILIZE THE HUMAN AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES OF THE NATION AND TO COMBAT POVERTY AND TO RECEIVE AND EXPEND FEDERAL, STATE, AND OTHER FUNDS FOR THIS PURPOSE AND TO INAUGURATE AND ESTABLISH PROGRAMS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE PURPOSES THROUGHOUT THE AREA OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT.”; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission has a 39 year history as the community action agency for Nashville and Davidson County promoting self-sufficiency for limited income individuals and families and identifying the barriers to achieving such; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission has made essential contributions to individuals and families in Nashville and Davidson County by providing them with innovative and cost-effective programs; and
WHEREAS, community action agencies are needed as major participants in the reform of the welfare system; and
WHEREAS, welfare reform in Davidson County has benefited from the city’s support of the Metropolitan Action Commission; and
WHEREAS, the limited income citizens of Nashville and Davidson County continue to need opportunities to improve their lives and their living conditions, thus ensuring that all citizens in Nashville and Davidson County are able to live in dignity; and
WHEREAS, Nashville and Davidson County, the entire State of Tennessee, and the United States of America as a whole must continue to wage war on poverty by providing support and opportunities for all citizens in need of assistance; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the Metropolitan Action Commission for their commitment in helping people help themselves and each other.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT
OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming May 30, 2003, to be “Community Action Day” in Nashville and Davidson County and commemorating the Metropolitan Action Commission as the community’s action agency.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Metropolitan Action Commission on behalf of “Community Action Day” 2003.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
