RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1444


A resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of radio station 91.1 FM WRVU.


WHEREAS, saluting the 50th anniversary of WRVU which has provided opportunities to students and community members to participate in noncommercial radio and provided Middle-Tennessee residents with free educational and entertainment programming; and

WHEREAS, WRVU, is the student radio station at Vanderbilt University which broadcasted its first official program on March 30, 1953; and

WHEREAS, WRVU broadcasts daily to an audience covering Middle-Tennessee and southern Kentucky providing diverse music programming including material heard no where else on radio; and

WHEREAS, in the absence of an academic broadcasting program at Vanderbilt, WRVU has served as a training ground that has launched the careers of many radio professionals; and

WHEREAS, a broadcaster of alternative programming, WRVU was the first to air the music of performers who went on to gain national acclaim; and

WHEREAS, WRVU has not only produced and distributed original recordings of artists who were underrepresented by the mainstream music industry, but has served as the launching pad for students who have gone on to work in the music industry as writers, producers, and performers; and

WHEREAS, WRVU is an annual sponsor of live music events for the Nashville community that showcase musical genres and performers who might otherwise receive little exposure; and

WHEREAS, WRVU has attracted positive attention to Vanderbilt and Nashville in the local and national media; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes WRVU for its fifty years as the student operated voice of Vanderbilt University.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as the 50th anniversary of radio station 91.1 FM WRVU.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to WRVU.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
