RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1443


A resolution recognizing the Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee on its 100th Anniversary.


WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, formerly known as the Nashville Boys Club and Aid Society, will celebrate its Centennial in 2003, culminating 100 years of service to youth and families in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee community; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee is to inspire and enable all youth, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens; and

WHEREAS, the organization dates back to 1903, with a group of women offering to provide afternoon games, as well as food, bathing, and other activities as a means to rescue young men from delinquent activities in the downtown Nashville area, and years later developed into the current program; and

WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee is a vital agency, serving youth in the community through variety of nationally recognized programs in five core areas: character and leadership development; education and career development; health and life skills; the arts; and sports, fitness and recreation; and

WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee is a valued member of the national movement of the Boys & Girls Club of America; and

WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee consists of nine Nashville, Davidson County and Williamson County locations, which were born out of the need to serve those from a disadvantaged background and to empower youth to build quality, productive lives for themselves; and

WHEREAS, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee continues to impact the lives of over 3,000 youth annually who are between the ages of 6 and 18 years; and

WHEREAS the core beliefs of Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee are that it provides youth with a safe place to learn and grow; ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals; life-enhancing programs and character development experiences; hope, opportunity and access; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and honors the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee for its outstanding contributions to the community throughout the past 100 years.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee on its 100th Anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Executive Director on behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
