RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1440


A resolution recognizing Dr. James William Johnson posthumous.


WHEREAS, on May 6, 2003, family and friends who were privileged to share the love and friendship of Dr. James William Johnson gathered to celebrate his memory; and

WHERAS, Dr. James William Johnson, was born September 30, 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; and

WHERAS, as a professor, Dr. James William Johnson taught at Vanderbilt University Medical School winning the prestigious Shovel Award for Outstanding Lecturer in the process; and

WHERAS, as physician, Dr. James William Johnson, delivered thousands of babies in Middle Tennessee including those of U.S. Senators, a Tennessee governor, and the Vice-President of the United States; and

WHERAS, as dedicated fraternity advisor, Dr. James William Johnson provided guidance and support to members of the Kappa Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Vanderbilt and other chapters for over forty (40) years; and

WHREAS, Dr. James William Johnson was awarded Kappa Sigma Alumnus of the Year and the Kappa Sigma Award for 43 Years of Outstanding Service and Dedication; and

WHERAS, Dr. James William Johnson, was married to Sara Evans Johnson for over thirty-five (35) years and is survived by four devoted children and eight grandchildren who miss him dearly; and

WHEREAS, having lived a life that was dedicated to unselfish service Dr. James William Johnson was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church and served in the vestry; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James William Johnson is remembered with great affection, admiration and having a sense of humor, clandestinely raised hundreds of chickens in the back yard of his home in West Meade much to the dismay of some of his neighbors, including a few councilmembers at the time; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James William Johnson’s passing leaves a hole in the lives of the citizens of Nashville, his family, church, fraternity, former patients, colleagues, and pupils; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council express their condolences to the family of Dr. James William Johnson at his passing.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dr. James William Johnson posthumous.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Dr. James William Johnson

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
