RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1402
A resolution supporting members of the United States Armed Forces involved
in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
WHEREAS, the United States and other coalition members have commenced military action in Iraq, known as Operation Iraqi Freedom, to remove Saddam Hussein from power and to rid Iraq of weapons of mass destruction; and
WHEREAS, more than 225,000 men and women of the United States Armed Forces are now involved in the conflict in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, over 200,000 members of the Reserves and National Guard have been called to active duty for the conflict in Iraq and other purposes; and
WHEREAS, approximately 20,000 troops from the 101st Airborne Division out of neighboring Fort Campbell, Kentucky have been deployed for the conflict in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, a number of the United States troops in Iraq are residents of or have close ties to Nashville and Davidson County; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council affirmatively show support for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as:
supporting and expressing gratitude to all members of the United States Armed
Forces, whether on active duty, in the National Guard, or in the Reserves;
and
supporting and expressing gratitude to the family members of soldiers, sailors,
airmen, and Marines serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom who have borne the burden
of sacrifice and separation from their loved ones.
Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to President George W. Bush, U.S. Senators Bill Frist and Lamar Alexander, U.S. Representatives Marsha Blackburn and Jim Cooper, and to Colonel Kim L. Summers, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
