RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1375


A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to prohibit organizations, such as the ACLU, from using public school property for the purpose of promoting and engaging in political activities.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education has a policy that allows certain groups to rent and use school property under certain circumstances; and

WHEREAS, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) recently conducted a forum before high school students at Hillsboro High School; and

WHEREAS, the ACLU is an organization that has attempted and is attempting to influence the adoption or defeat of legislation before the Metropolitan County Council; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education should not allow outside organizations to utilize school property for the purposes of promoting and engaging in political activities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to prohibit organizations, such as the ACLU, from using public school property for the purpose of promoting and engaging in political activities.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to members of the Board of Public Education.

SECTION 3. That the Board of Public Education is further requested to inform The Metropolitan Council of the feasibility and/or the actions taken in compliance with the request contained in Section 1 thereof, not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

SECTION 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
