RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-1368

WHEREAS, The American Red Cross, is one of the nation’s oldest, most recognized humanitarian organizations and today, the mission of this organization is more relevant than ever as we confront a changing world full of unique challenges; and

WHEREAS, in conjunction with March 2003 as American Red Cross Month the Nashville Area Red Cross will launch a new preparedness campaign on March 7, 2003; and

WHEREAS, our preparedness campaign, “Operation Always Ready” encourages schools, empowering individuals, families and businesses to protect themselves and to make their community better prepared for the unexpected by doing four things, building a disaster kit, making a disaster plan, getting trained in CPR and first aid, or as a disaster relief volunteer, and giving blood; and

WHEREAS, the victims of more than 233 disasters, mostly single family fires received help from the Nashville Area Red Cross last year and over 800 U.S. military families received direct assistance keeping them connected in times of great personal sorrow and joy; and

WHEREAS, those who need blood, are victims of disaster or recipients from the broad spectrum of community services rely on the Nashville Area Red Cross every day; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and celebrates American Red Cross Month and calls upon all our citizens of the Nashville area to become partners in preparedness with their local Red Cross chapters and to become active participants in advancing the noble mission of the American Red Cross.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming March 2003 as American Red Cross Month in Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the American Red Cross.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
