RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-987

A resolution proclaiming April 20, 2002, as Earth Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, Earth Day recognizes the importance of protecting the environment for the health of current and future generations; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22nd (or an appropriate weekend date) to commemorate the first recognition in 1970; and

WHEREAS, the City of Nashville and Davidson County recognizes the urban environment is irreplaceable and fragile and must be preserved for future generations; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day is an important opportunity to discuss and learn about conversation and environmental protection, especially reducing, reusing and recycling; and

WHEREAS, Nashville and Davidson County communities should come together this Earth Day at a convenient time in order to acknowledge the appreciation of our mutual home, Plant Earth, and bring a global feeling of community through realization of our deepening desire for life, freedom and love, and our mutual dependence on each other; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County, with the concurrence of the Mayor of Nashville, recognizes April 20, 2002, for the Nashville Earth Day Festival to be celebrated at Centennial Park; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council proclaim April 20, 2002, as Earth Day in Nashville and Davidson County, and take the opportunity to renew the commitment to protect our environment.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming April 20, 2002, as Earth Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Nashville Earth Day Committee.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
