RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-986

A resolution proclaiming the week of April 7th - April 13th as "Week of the Young Child" for 2002.

WHEREAS, Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County and other local organizations, in conjunction with the Nashville Association for the Education of Young Children, are celebrating the "Week of the Young Child", April 7th through April 13th; and

WHEREAS, the "Week of the Young Child" is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), first established in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lays the foundation for children's success in school and later life; and

WHEREAS, the theme for the "Week of the Young Child" for 2002 is "Vote For Children"; and

WHEREAS, the "Week of the Young Child" is a time to recognize that early childhood is where our future begins, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment that will promote early learning; and

WHEREAS, by calling attention to the need for high-quality early childhood services for all children and families within our community/state, these groups hope to improve the quality and availability of such services; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council joins forces with the Nashville Area Association for the Education of Young Children, Vanderbilt University, Metro Action Commission and Community Organizations throughout Nashville, Tennessee and America to observe "Week of the Young Child"; and

WHEREAS, the children of our community are our responsibility and early childhood is a time of enormous opportunity to grow, to learn and to dream; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize high-quality early childhood services in representing a worthy commitment to our children's future.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming the week of April 7th - April 13th, as "Week of the Young Child" for 2002.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Nashville Area Association for the Education of Young Children and the Week of the Young Child Steering Committee, on behalf of their work with the "Week of the Young Child".

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
