A resolution proclaiming April 12, 2002 as CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville Day and endorsing the "six pillars of character".

Whereas, CHARACTER COUNTS! Is a consortium of nation's largest and most influential educational and youth-serving organizations united in a mission to strengthen the character of America: youth and adults alike; and

Whereas, CHARACTER COUNTS! is a national grass-roots effort to provide a common vocabulary among the varying facets of the community to raise awareness of the need for good character; and

Whereas, the goal is to provide guidance, training and ideas on how to integrate the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship into school programs, organizations and communities; and

Whereas, CHARACTER COUNTS! allows for a multitude of programs for educators, youth and community leaders to increase awareness through programs and events to build local consensus on core ethical values; and

Whereas, the approach is that in order to teach character we must also enforce it, advocate it, and model it; and

Whereas, CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville is spearheaded by Lipscomb University and led by a steering committee of over 50 people and chaired by former Governor Winfield Dunn; and

Whereas, CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville is involving individuals and entities in the public, private and non-profit sectors and will ask all of Nashville to endorse "The Six Pillars" and

Whereas, CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville will publicly kick-off its efforts on April 12, 2002, and it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize that date as CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville Day.

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Council of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as endorsing the "six pillars of character" of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship by promising to endeavor to be truthful: to respect one another and our constituents; to be responsible with public resources and; to be as fair as possible to all citizens.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council also goes on record as proclaiming April 12, 2002 as CHARACTER COUNTS! Nashville Day.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Steering Committee Chair, the Honorable Winfield Dunn and Dr. Mary Morris of the Lipscomb Center for Character Development.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
