RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-963

A resolution recognizing Dr. Dewey W. Grantham for his contribution to the Nashville Public Library.

WHEREAS, on Sunday, January 27, 2002, Dr. Dewey W. Grantham, historian and educator, was recognized for his donation of his nearly 4,000-volume collection of research books to the Nashville Public Library; and

WHEREAS, this extensive and extremely well focused research collection of books, shelved in the Nashville Room at the Nashville Public Library, focuses on the history of post-Civil War American history and the American South; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Grantham's collection consists of historian-penned books and reminiscences written by participants, like those who participated in President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, major scholarships of the past 50 years covering the two focus areas of the collection - post-Civil War America and the American South, sets of the published papers and correspondence of major political and military leaders, among them Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Booker T. Washington and many other historical events; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Grantham's donation of his unique collection of post-Civil War American history and the American South to the Nashville Public Library was a gift that will undoubtedly benefit historians for generations to come and will help to ensure that an important part of our nation's history will not be lost; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Dr. Dewey W. Grantham for his deep appreciation for his stewardship of our nation's history.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dr. Dewey W. Grantham for his contribution to the Nashville Public Library.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Dewey W. Grantham.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
