RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-960

A resolution proclaiming Friday, March 1, 2002 as "Read Across America Day" in Nashville.

WHEREAS, the citizens in conjunction with the National "Read Across America Day" sponsored by NEA, the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association stand firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of the future, and their ability to compete in a global economy; and

WHEREAS, we are celebrating in Nashville with individuals, government officials, business leaders, educators and others going into the schools and reading books by Dr. Seuss; and

WHEREAS, the state of Tennessee has provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education of our youth, grounded in the principle that educational investment is key to the community's well being and long-term quality of life; and

WHEREAS, "NEA's Read Across America Day", a national celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2nd, promote reading and adult involvement in the education of our community's students.

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council enthusiastically endorses "Read Across America" and recommits our community to engage in programs and activities to make America's children the best readers in the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming Friday, March 1, 2002 as "Read Across America Day" in Nashville.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented representatives of the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
