RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-950

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to provide the Metro Council with a plan to utilize existing classroom capacity.

WHEREAS, in many inner-city areas there are school buildings that have capacity for more students than are presently utilizing these schools; and

WHEREAS, in the suburban areas of the city there are a number of schools that still use portable classrooms and are overcrowded; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Board of Public Education provide the Council with a plan to utilize existing school capacity prior to incurring capital costs for new classrooms and schools.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to provide the Council with a current assessment of existing classroom capacity and a plan to utilize most, if not all, of that classroom capacity.

In addition, Council requests that the Board of Education provide the Council with a list of all school buildings, the number of students at each school, the capacity for students at each school, and the location and number of portable classrooms being utilized.

SECTION 2. That the plan and information requested shall be provided to the Council not later than May 15, 2002.

SECTION 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the members of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

AMENDMENT NO. 1

TO

RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-950

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS2002-950 by deleting the phrase "a plan to utilize existing classroom capacity", wherein it appears in the caption, and inserting the phrase "an assessment of existing classroom capacity and alternatives to utilize such existing capacity".

I further move to amend Resolution No. RS2002-950 by deleting the phrase "a plan to utilize most, if not all, of that classroom capacity", wherein it appears in Section 1, and inserting the phrase "alternatives to utilize such existing capacity".
