RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-947
A resolution requesting that public and privately-owned arenas and stadiums in the area of the Metropolitan Government decline to be the site for a proposed Mike Tyson heavyweight boxing event.
WHEREAS, a proposed heavyweight
boxing championship bout, previously scheduled for Las Vegas, Nevada, has been
cancelled due to the failure of heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson to obtain a boxing
license in the State of Nevada; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tyson, a convicted rapist, has a history of abusive conduct toward women and undesirable conduct, both in and out of the boxing arena; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government has invested millions of dollars to promote professional and amateur athletics, both to allow for participation and opportunities for viewing such events, to provide wholesome and competitive entertainment for its residents; and
WHEREAS, hosting the proposed boxing match is contrary to the goal of this government to provide for the public safety, health and welfare of its citizens.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting that public and privately-owned arenas and stadiums in the area of the Metropolitan Government decline to be the site for a proposed Mike Tyson heavyweight boxing event.
SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution the operators of Adelphia Coliseum, the Gaylord Entertainment Center, the Municipal Auditorium, AmSouth Amphitheater, and Vanderbilt University.
SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
