RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-935

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission to reconsider its decision to deny 30 minutes of free parking in all Metro-owned lots and garages if persons park only 30 minutes or less.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has instituted a program that provides for 30 minutes of free parking at the airport if a person parks for only 30 minutes or less; and

WHEREAS, numerous citizens who use these facilities do use these parking facilities for a very short time period; and

WHEREAS, it would improve relations and provide for quicker turnover in Metro-owned parking lots and garages if a similar program were adopted that allows free parking if parking in those facilities were limited to 30 minutes or less; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Traffic and Parking Commission permits free parking in the Metro Courthouse lot on weekdays between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and all day on Saturdays and Sundays; and

WHEREAS, the Downtown Partnership is working on initiatives to improve the availability of parking to encourage business opportunities, including an initiative to utilize the Adelphia Coliseum parking lots without cost to parkers; and

WHEREAS, providing efficient and reasonably priced parking facilities will enhance and encourage opportunities in downtown Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metro Traffic and Parking Commission to provide 30 minutes or less of free parking in all Metro-owned lots and garages if persons park only 30 minutes or less.
