RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-913

A resolution recognizing Soroptimist International of Nashville upon their Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration.

WHEREAS, on December 4, 2001, Soroptimist International of Nashville, an affiliate of Soroptimist International of the Americas, celebrated their Fiftieth Anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Soroptimist International of the Americas, a volunteer service organization for women in business, management and the professions, was formed in 1921 by a group of 80 women in Oakland, California, choosing their name from two Latin words meaning "best for women", and

WHEREAS, the heart of Soroptimist's mission is to "make a difference for women" through volunteer service to the community, choosing projects carefully to address challenges unique to today's women, such as providing minority women with routine medical care, funding domestic violence shelters, sponsoring career development programs for teen mothers, and tutoring women in literacy and basic job skills; and

WHEREAS, Soroptimist's major service project, the Women's Opportunity Awards program, provides cash grants for head-of-household women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional education and training, and as a recognized authority on matters that women value most, uses its international voice and official status with the United Nations to advocate on behalf of women's issues; and

WHEREAS, Soroptimist International of Nashville has contributed time, money, and wish-list items to the following local organizations: Protestant Orphanage, Women Opportunity Award, Violet Richardson Award, YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter, Dan Mills Elementary, Child Advocacy Center, Re-Leaf Nashville, Ronald McDonald House, Madison Domestic Violence Center, Trevecca Scholarship, Food/Christmas Gifts for Families in Need, Contributed to Restoration of Statue of Liberty, Orphanage in China, Hospitality House, Oasis Center, Mercy Ministries, Food Bank, YCAP Academy, Red Cross, Tornado/Hurricane Relief, Hospice Alive, Angel Tree, Meals on Wheels, and dressed dolls for children at Metro General Hospital; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Soroptimist International of Nashville on its Fiftieth Anniversary.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Soroptimist International of Nashville upon their Fiftieth Anniversary.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to Soroptimist International of Nashville.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
