RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-912

A resolution honoring Guy Edward Bates, Sr., posthumous.

WHEREAS, Mr. Bates served as Councilman of District 1 from September 1975 until August 1991, which district area includes the communities of Joelton, Whites Creek, Scottsboro, and Bordeaux; and

WHEREAS, during his Council terms, Mr. Bates served as Chairman or a Member of the Budget & Finance, Public Works, School, Parks & Recreation, and the Charter Revision Committees of the Metro Council; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bates believed in and devoted his career to progressive projects that would benefit his community, his district, and the City of Nashville, and he was instrumental in the implementation and completion of the following projects: Martin Luther King, Jr., Bridge, Cockrell Bend Bridge, Jefferson Street Bridge, Church Street Viaduct, Criminal Justice Center, Ben West Rehabilitation Center, Nashville Convention Center, Nashville Thermal Transfer Plant, Commerce Street Widening, Water & Sewerage expansion projects, Briley Parkway Expansion, and the Sheriff's Department Clean-Up Crew; and

WHEREAS, during his involvement with the implementation of county-wide fire protection, Mr. Bates donated to the city the land on which the Joelton Fire Hall is built; and

WHEREAS, in 1965 following his career in the aircraft industry, Mr. Bates purchased his late father's grocery store in Joelton - Joelton Food Town - where he built a new and larger store to serve the community, which soon became a gathering place where citizens could stop by and visit with each other and learn about local events; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bates sponsored the local Dixie Youth Baseball teams for many, many years, and he also gave his sponsorship to the local youth basketball and football teams; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bates also served the community as a Member and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bi-Rite Foods, and as a Member and Vice-Chairman of Baptist Healthcare Board; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Bates was a long time member and active supporter of First Baptist Church of Joelton; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council, as well as the entire community of Nashville and Davidson County, was saddened to learn of the death of Guy Edward Bates, Sr., on October 3, 2000, and we recognize his contributions as a tireless public servant; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honor Guy Edward Bates, Sr., for his outstanding contributions to area of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring Guy Edward Bates, Sr., posthumous, for his outstanding contributions to Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to the family of Guy Edward Bates, Sr.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
