RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-902

A resolution recognizing Dr. Bobby Lovett for his service to the Nashville community through his leadership of the Metropolitan Historical Commission and his contributions to the study of Nashville History.

WHEREAS, on July 30, 2001, Dr. Bobby Lovett retired from the Metropolitan Historical Commission, on which he had served for fifteen years, the last four as chair; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lovett began a career in teaching in 1969 in Memphis, Tennessee, which led to his accepting a position in 1973 as Instructor of History at Tennessee State University, where he then became assistant professor, associate professor, and full Professor of History; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lovett has served as Head of the Department of History and Geography, Acting Dean of the University College, Assistant Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, and from 1988-2000 as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Tennessee State University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lovett has contributed greatly to the documentation of local African American history, with numerous journal and encyclopedia articles and essays, as well as books, including The African American History of Nashville, Tennessee, 1780-1930, to his credit, and he is the foremost authority on the African American involvement with Fort Negley; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lovett partnered with the Metropolitan Historical Commission in 1981 to begin the Local Conference on Afro-American Culture and History, which has awakened thousands of adults and young people to the value of learning their history, which conference he has chaired since its inception and which will be held for the 21st year on February 13, 2002; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lovett will be honored at this conference by the Metropolitan Historical Commission with its Achievement Award, given to those people who contribute greatly to the field of local history; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and expresses appreciation to Dr. Lovett for his service to the city of Nashville and for his accomplishments in educating this community about its rich history.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dr. Bobby Lovett for his service to the Nashville community through his leadership of the Metropolitan Historical Commission and his contributions to the study of Nashville History.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Bobby Lovett.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
