RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-895

A resolution recognizing James Upchurch for his outstanding act of heroism.

WHEREAS, the extraordinary courage and composure in the face of danger that James Upchurch of Bordeaux showed is indeed deserving of special recognition for his heroic efforts on Wednesday, November 28, 2001; and

WHEREAS, on his way to an appointment Mr. Upchurch, without hesitation and regard for his own personal safety, rendered aid by risking his own life to save the life of his elderly wheelchair-bound neighbor Mr. Leon Hale from a house fire; and

WHEREAS, suffering from smoke inhalation from the burning house Mr. Hale is truly fortunate to have a good Samaritan such as Mr. Upchurch to enter the burning house and battle through the heavy smoke to reach his friend and neighbor and pull him to safety; and

WHEREAS, the prompt intervention and quick-thinking of Mr. Upchurch and the spirit and bravery which he displayed saved his neighbor from certain death, preserving the life of a fellow human being; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize this truly remarkable man, Mr. James Upchurch, for his outstanding act of heroism.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing James Upchurch for his outstanding act of heroism.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. James Upchurch.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
