RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1235

A resolution requesting the Department of Public Works – Waste Management Division to initiate a program to remind residents on a monthly basis to place their recycling containers at the curb.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government has instituted a curbside recycling program within the Urban Services District whereby residents’ recyclables are collected on a monthly basis; and

WHEREAS, since recyclables are only collected curbside once a month, many residents have difficulty remembering to place the recycling container at the curb for collection; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works has the technology to notify residents who choose to be reminded of the collection dates by telephone or e-mail; and

WHEREAS, initiating such a program to remind residents of collection dates would encourage and promote the recycling efforts of the Metropolitan Government and would increase resident recycling participation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Department of Public Works – Solid Waste Division to initiate a program to remind residents participating in the Metropolitan Government’s curbside recycling program who request to be reminded, by telephone or e-mail, as to when their recyclables will be collected. Residents requesting to participate in such a program should be reminded one day prior to the collection date to place their recycling containers at the curb.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Director of Public Works and to the Assistant Director of Public Works – Waste Management Division.

Section 3. That the Director of Public Works and/or the Assistant Director of Public Works – Waste Management Division is further requested to inform the Metropolitan Council of the feasibility of and/or the actions taken in compliance with the request contained in Section 1 hereof, not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.
