RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1229


A resolution recognizing the Declaration of Independence Road Trip exhibit.


WHEREAS, the Declaration of Independence is the birth certificate of our nation; and

WHEREAS, on the night of July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, John Dunlap printed 200 “broadsides” of the text written by Thomas Jefferson and approved by the Second Continental Congress declaring independence from British rule; and

WHEREAS, the principles set forth in this document are just as relevant today as when they were written, and serve to inspire the citizens of our nation to civic action; and

WHEREAS, one of the 25 surviving copies of Dunlap’s broadsides is touring the United States as part of the Declaration of Independence Road Trip; and

WHEREAS, thanks to the dedication and support of the Declaration of Independence Road Trip and its founder Norman Lear, its national sponsors Home Depot and the United States Postal Service, and members of the Nashville Host Committee, the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County will be able to enjoy and be inspired by this document; and

WHEREAS, the Declaration of Independence Road Trip exhibit will be on display November 9, 2002, through November 21, 2002, at the Nashville Public Library, an institution devoted to preserving and sharing across generations the wisdom, culture, and history of our community; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and are joined by the people of Nashville in proclaiming the days from November 9th through November 21st 2002, as Declaration of Independence Days in the city of Nashville and Davidson County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Declaration of Independence Road Trip exhibit.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
