RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1171


A resolution recognizing October 20, 2002, as “Celebrate Antioch Day”.

WHEREAS, on Sunday, October 20, 2002, Pastor Sim Hassler and the congregation of Antioch First Baptist Church will host the First Annual “Celebrate Antioch Day”; and

WHEREAS, “Celebrate Antioch Day” will recognize the committed work of the Neighbors of Antioch group, along with their President Ken Hollis, and praise their efforts to clean up and change the Antioch Community by having neighbors to come together and share in this celebration; and

WHEREAS, the Neighbors of Antioch have been instrumental in promoting the welfare of the Antioch Community by joining together to help and assist the elderly, sponsoring community pick-up days to clean up the roads, keeping track of area property assessments, sponsoring Neighborhood Block Parties where the neighbors come together and work with the Metro Police and Fire Departments on ways to help keep their neighborhoods safe; and

WHEREAS, the Antioch Community represents a classic example of how people of all classes, races and ethnic backgrounds can live and work together in the same community, further promoting a deep history that traces back to the Civil War; and

WHEREAS, during Celebrate Antioch Day the community will also celebrate the work of author Joy Marshall on the publication of her new book, “Good Will and Affection”, which traces the roots and heritage of Antioch; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the diversity and unity of the Antioch Community by recognizing and proclaiming October 20, 2002, as “Celebrate Antioch Day”.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Sunday, October 20, 2002, as the First Annual “Celebrate Antioch Day” hosted by Pastor Sim Hassler and the Congregation of Antioch First Baptist Church, in partnership with the Neighbors of Antioch.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare copies of this Resolution to be presented to Pastor Sim Hassler and to Ken Hollis, President of Neighbors of Antioch.

SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
