RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1137

A resolution recognizing National Grandparents Day.

WHEREAS, on Sunday, September 8, 2002, as we seek to strengthen the enduring values of the family, it is appropriate that we recognize grandparents; and

WHEREAS, in 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day; and

WHEREAS, grandparents are the unsung heroes and sheroes whose labors of love, compassion, and concern so often go unrewarded; and

WHEREAS, grandparents are often the primary caretakers of thousands of children who might otherwise become a part of Child Protective Services of the State, and who have reared their own children are once again called upon to render care for a second generation; and

WHEREAS, generally, grandparents are individuals who have been blessed with insight, courage and fortitude to persevere often on limited income and assets; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the contributions that Grandparents make on a daily basis to the stability, and continuity of the family.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing National Grandparents Day.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Council on Aging.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
