RESOLUTON NO. RS2002-1093

A resolution supporting the acceptance of a paperless, electronic law enforcement block grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting through the Department of Metropolitan Police for the benefit of various departments of the Metropolitan Government.

Whereas, application was made to the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, for an award of grant monies from the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program for fiscal year 2002 in an amount not to exceed Two Million Forty Nine Thousand Two Hundred Forty Four Dollars ($2,049,244) for the benefit of the Department of Police, The Office of The District Attorney General, The Sheriff’s Office, Metropolitan Public Schools Justice Information Systems, Drug Court, Juvenile Court and the Office of the Public Defender; and,

Whereas, the paperless, electronic grant has been awarded to the Metropolitan Government for the use and benefit of the municipality to reduce crime and improve public safety; and,

Whereas, the participating departments have submitted their intent to meet the ten percent (10%) local match of Two Hundred Twenty Seven Thousand Six Hundred Ninety Four Dollars ($227,694) and the utilization of said monies within their departments; and,

Whereas, the Department of Police hereby accepts oversight and management responsibility of the grant and the matching funds; and

Whereas the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance requires that the legislative body of the jurisdiction accept the grant award on or before August 4, 2002 or the funds will be deobligated and awarded to another jurisdiction.

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Council of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County:

Section 1. In order to comply with the required acceptance deadline of August 4, 2002, the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as believing that acceptance of this grant award is beneficial to the Metropolitan Government and therefore it intends to approve on third and final reading said acceptance at its regularly scheduled August 6, 2002 meeting date.

Section 2. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
