RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1072

A resolution authorizing the Mayor to submit an application for a Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act Federal Formula Grant to be disbursed to Metro through the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth for the benefit of the Metropolitan Public Defenders Office, Juvenile Division.

Whereas, the United States Department of Justice is accepting applications for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act Formula Grants; and,

Whereas, the Metropolitan Public Defenders Office, Juvenile Division is eligible for the funding and interested in initiating services consistent with the goal of the grant, to reduce the number of minority children in secure confinement; and,

Whereas, the Federal Government requires that the grant application be approved by resolution, motion, or similar act of the applicant's governing body; and,

Whereas, it is to the benefit of the citizens of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County that this grant application be approved and submitted; and,

Whereas, the Metropolitan Public Defenders Office hereby accepts oversight of the grant and has submitted their intent to absorb the required match in their budget for the second and third years, should the grant be awarded for three consecutive years.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Mayor is authorized to submit an application to the United States Department of Justice for a Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act Formula Grant, a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein.

Section 2. That funds for any required match of dollars received shall be provided through the budget of the Metropolitan Public Defenders Office, the department accepting oversight and management responsibility of the grant and matching funds.

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
