RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1055
A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to oppose the adoption of an income tax in the State of Tennessee.
WHEREAS, the Tennessee General Assembly has currently under consideration legislation that would impose an income tax on the people of Tennessee, and
WHEREAS, an income tax on wages, income and compensation of persons is not permitted by the Constitution of the State of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, the Supreme Court of Tennessee has previously ruled that such an income tax is unconstitutional under the Constitution of the State of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, the people of Tennessee already are heavily taxed with sales and use taxes, property taxes, and business taxes; and
WHEREAS, the people of Tennessee are already adjusting their own lifestyles during the slow-down in the economy in Tennessee, which has resulted in the loss of employment, and less available income to meet personal needs; and
WHEREAS, the people of Tennessee would be better served if the Tennessee General Assembly would adopt a balanced budget supported by presently available funding.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to oppose the adoption of an income tax in Tennessee.
