RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1029

A resolution recognizing Alex French as the Davidson County and Regional Spelling Bee Champion of 2002.

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Trevecca Nazarene University, Alex French, of Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School demonstrated true academic excellence by becoming the Spelling Bee Champion of Davidson County for the second year in a row; and

WHEREAS, she competed against more than seventy students from over thirty-five Davidson County public and private middle schools, where she lasted all eleven rounds to earn the title of 2002 Davidson County Spelling Bee Champion; and

WHEREAS, words that Alex had to overcome throughout the course of competition were blitz, forgery, lackadaisical, resilience, among others along with her final and winning word of pavilion; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the accomplishments of students like Alex French, who win the title of Spelling Bee Champion and to encourage their continued mastery of spelling and learning of new words; and

WHEREAS, this talented young student was then afforded the opportunity to test her spelling skills against others at the Regional Spelling Bee at Lipscomb University on March 26, 2002; and

WHEREAS, Alex, kept her Regional Spelling Bee crown by spelling stereognosis to win the championship that allows her to represent Davidson County at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee later on this month in Washington D.C.; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize this seventh grader's performance in these challenging contests that reflect her knowledge of words and her discipline and determination to learn to spell.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Alex French as the Davidson County and Regional Spelling Bee Champion of 2002.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Alex French.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
