RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1028

A resolution recognizing the students of Hull-Jackson Montessori School on making a "freedom quilt".

WHEREAS, the purpose of the "freedom quilt" is to raise money for scholarships of those children who lost a parent during the September 11th 2002, tragedy; and

WHEREAS, Mr. John Runca Art Director of Hull-Jackson Montessori Magnet School, along with student council representatives Daniel Collins and Ben Weinzimer, took charge of the project by introducing several 9 and 10-year olds to the art of quilting, which is one of the oldest crafts in America; and

WHEREAS, these students made a quilt using fabric markers to decorate squares showing images of peace, freedom and sharing to commemorate the destruction of the World Trade Center; and

WHEREAS, the following students were the creators of the original "freedom quilt": Ben Weinzimer, Daniel Collins, Chaplin Hull, Teresa Peatman, Britany Love, Jason Kim, Yasmin Ramadan, Corbin Williams, Katie Quintanilla, Tushar Parbhu, Aimee Chun, Brandon Tansil, Tyrell King, Kimberly White, Ryan Noble, Cresa Reynolds, Kiaana Howard, Marissa Yarbrough, Yvonne Gross, Mika Osborne, Anna Sohl, Alexandria Boyd, Maria Witherspoon, Kiia Harris, Nantammbu Fentress, Shannon Slaughter, Kayla Saito, EmmaJulia Jones, Antonio Thomas, Ayanna Spaulding; and

WHEREAS, on April 3, 2002, in a ceremony at the school a silent auction was held where the "freedom quilt" was auctioned and presented to the first temporary recipient, Mr. Bill Weaver; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the students of Hull-Jackson Montessori School who participated in making the "freedom quilt".

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the students of Hull-Jackson Montessori School on making a "freedom quilt".

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. John Runca.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
