RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1026

A resolution recognizing May as Community Action Month throughout the nation and commemorating the Metropolitan Action Commission as Nashville and Davidson County's community action agency.

WHEREAS, community action agencies were created when the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 was signed into law; and

WHREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission was created by ordinance in 1964 to serve as the community action agency for Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission has more than a 38-year history of promoting self-sufficiency for low-income individuals and families and identifying the barriers to achieving such; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission has made essential contribution to low-income individuals and families in Nashville and Davidson County by providing them with innovative and cost-effective programs; and

WHEREAS, community action agencies are needed as a major participant in the collaborative effort to eliminate individual and family dependency on the welfare system as we know it; and

WHEREAS, collaborative efforts in Nashville and Davidson has benefited from partnership with the Metropolitan Action Commission; and

WHEREAS, the limited income individuals and families continue to need opportunities to improve their lives and their living conditions, thus ensuring that all citizens are able to live in dignity; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Metropolitan Action Commission for not only their hard work and dedication but on their continuing efforts to wage war on poverty by providing support and opportunities for all persons in need of assistance.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing May as Community Action Month throughout the nation and commemorating the Metropolitan Action Commission as Nashville and Davidson County's community action agency.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Metro Action Commission Executive Director Cynthia L. Croom.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
