RESOLUTION NO. RS2002-1025

A resolution recognizing Mr. Robert Churchwell, Sr. on his accomplishments in journalism.

WHEREAS, a "newspaper man through and through" Mr. Churchwell has worked in the industry for more than three decades, beginning his career in 1950, as the first African-American reporter for Nashville's evening newspaper the Nashville Banner; and

WHEREAS, during his outstanding 31-year tenure as a journalistic reporter with the Nashville Banner, Mr. Churchwell has covered the African American community, Nashville's public and private schools throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's, witnessing and documenting social change in our community to writing obituaries and compiling the stock market report; and

WHEREAS, through his invaluable efforts at the Nashville Banner and immeasurable contributions to journalism, he has truly made a positive impact on countless lives; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Churchwell's hard work, commitment, ingenuity, and devotion to his profession will continue to contribute to our state for years to come; and

WHEREAS, some of his accomplishments include being a charter member of the regional National Association of Black journalist's Hall of Fame, and a co-founder of the Nashville Press Club; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from the paper, Mr. Churchwell continued his career in journalism by writing several freelancing pieces for The Tennessean and as a part-time columnist for the National Baptist Publishing Board's newsletter; and

WHEREAS, today Mr. Churchwell continues to write his autobiography that he started over ten years ago; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Mr. Robert Churchwell, Sr., for his dedication to journalism during his 31 years of service with the Nashville Banner and wish him much happiness.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mr. Robert Churchwell, Sr. on his accomplishments in journalism.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mr. Robert Churchwell, Sr.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
