A resolution urging all residents of the Metropolitan Government to participate in the Campaign to Promote Racial Justice.

WHEREAS, the 13th Amendment of the Constitution abolished slavery and the 14th Amendment gives all persons born or naturalized in the United States the right of due process and equal protection under the law; and

WHEREAS, the 1964 Civil Rights Act bans discrimination because of a person's race, color, national origin, religion or sex; and

WHEREAS, the area of the Metropolitan Government is a racially diverse community populated with more than 25 different ethnic groups of different religions, national origins, creeds, and physical abilities; and

WHEREAS, over 200 cities have joined in partnership with the National League of Cities to address race relations throughout our Country; and

WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Human Relations Commission has joined in partnership with the National League of Cities to participate in the Campaign to Promote Racial Justice; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council urges all persons within the area of the Metropolitan Government to undo racism, not discriminate, or knowingly harass, or subject to prejudice, any individual based upon race, creed, color, or national origin.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as urging all residents of the Metropolitan Government to participate in the Campaign to Promote Racism Justice. Further, the Metropolitan Council urges all persons within the area of the Metropolitan Government to participate in undoing racism and reaffirming our commitment to assure equality and freedom for all people within the area of the Metropolitan Government.

SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
