RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-836

A resolution in support of United States military involvement in Afghanistan.

WHEREAS, the terrorist attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, forced the United States to address the threat of terrorism on the United States and the World in a more firm and direct manner, including the implementation of a policy to uproot terrorist networks and training centers situated in certain foreign nations; and

WHEREAS, those nations that sponsored and provided haven for terrorists fall in the same category as the terrorist groups themselves; and

WHEREAS, the nation of Afghanistan has been proven to be a primary sponsor of terrorist activities and the shielding of terrorist groups against world reaction to their horrific actions; and

WHEREAS, the United States absolutely will not negotiate with nations that sponsor or provide protection for terrorist groups; and

WHEREAS, cooperation between international intelligence agencies has shown that Afghanistan is providing haven for the terrorist group and its leaders responsible for the September attack on the United States; and

WHEREAS, the refusal of the suspect Taliban regime in Afghanistan to cooperate with the United States and international authorities to surrender the leaders of the terrorist group associated with these attacks has forced the United States and other nations to take appropriate action to remove these terrorist threats; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of the Unites States should respect and support the actions taken by our elected representatives to remove these threats to the lives of all in the civilized world; and

WHEREAS, this domestic endorsement will support our military personnel in this area of the World and illustrate a unity that fundamentalist terrorists believe the United States is incapable of exuding.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as supporting the military involvement of the United States in the region of Afghanistan, and further, we request that other municipalities of the United States adopt similar legislation supporting United States involvement in Afghanistan designed to remove the terrorist threats from the United States and the World in general.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to President George W. Bush.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
