RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-810

A resolution honoring the Meigs Magnet School 2000-2001 Chess Club.

WHEREAS, the Meigs Magnet School Chess team under the coaching leadership of Mr. Jim Baringer, successfully competed at various levels of fierce competition with the Elementary "A" Team consisting of Josh Gao, Alex King, Myles MacDonald and Josh Kaufman won the Regional III Elementary Championship, and the Junior High "A" team consisting of Garret Smith, John Friend, Nick Palmquist and Nick Tataryn won the Junior High Regional III Championship; and

WHEREAS, the two teams moved on to the State Finals which featured the top 15 teams from all four regions for all school levels with the elementary team tying for first place; and

WHEREAS, the Meigs Magnet Chess team was invited to play at the Nationals in Kansas City which was the largest chess tournament ever held consisting of 5000 players from 48 or the 50 states; and

WHEREAS, the elementary team then finished in 10th place out of 36 elite teams with individual trophies being won by Josh Gao and Alex King, who won five out of seven rounds; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honors the Meigs Magnet School 2000-2001 Chess Club.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the Meigs Magnet School 2000-2001 Chess Club, coached by Mr. Jim Baringer, on its outstanding accomplishments.

SECTION 2. That the Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a certificate to be presented to the members of the Meigs Magnet School 2000-2001 Chess Club.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
