A resolution recognizing the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department SWAT Team.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan SWAT Team was formed in 1975 and incorporated into the Metropolitan Police Department in 1976; and

WHEREAS, on June 26-28, 2001, the SWAT Team from Nashville participated in the first annual Tennessee Tactical Challenge sponsored by the Tennessee Tactical Association; and

WHEREAS, this event provided head-to-head team and individual competition which included such events as an obstacle course, rope challenge, three-gun challenge, chemical challenge, officer down rescue, low-light challenge and the Tennessee Terminator; and

WHEREAS, members of the Metropolitan Nashville SWAT Team took first place honors while participating with several agencies throughout Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, members of the Police Department's winning team include: Lt. Melvin Brown, Lt. Steve Lewis, Lt. Steve Hewitt, Sgt. Bob Allen, Sgt. William Mackall, Sgt. Lee Dupie, Sgt. Ken Spencer, Sgt. Scott Billingsby, Officer Tony Jackson, Officer Tony Blackburn, and Officer Kirt Konyha; and

WHEREAS, members of the Police Department's SWAT team winning individual events include: Sgt. Bob Allen (Spirit of SWAT award and Marksman Challenge), Lt. Steve Lewis (Tennessee Top Gun, Three Gun Scramble and Biathlon), Lt. Melvin Brown (Handgun Marksmanship Challenge), and Officer Tony Jackson (Obstacle Challenge); and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Metropolitan SWAT Team for their outstanding performance and wish them continued success.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department SWAT Team.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Captain Richard Briggance, SWAT Commander, on behalf of each participant who competed in the Tennessee Tactical Challenge.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
