RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-721
A resolution recognizing the 100-Year Anniversary of The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Nashville Section.
WHEREAS, this year the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Nashville Section is celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, the NCJW, Nashville Section was founded by then National President, Hannah Solomon in 1901 following the establishment of the National Organization in 1893; and
WHEREAS, the NCJW was created as an organization to "shape the destinies and possibilities" of American lives and in Mrs. Solomon's words the work of NCJW would be "divided into the study of the Jewish religion and history and the work of philanthropy"; and
WHEREAS, NCJW, Nashville Section began with sixty women at its inception and has grown to approximately 1,000 members; and
WHEREAS, its mission is as "a volunteer organization, inspired by Jewish values, that works through a program of research, education, advocacy, and community service, to improve the quality of life for women, children and families and strives to ensure individual rights and freedom for all"; and
WHEREAS, the Nashville Section NCJW has had a long history of service to the Nashville Community and many of its projects have become an important part of the lives of many Nashvillians; and
WHEREAS, included amongst the many outstanding community projects supported by the Nashville Section are: Building Bridges, Buz-A-Bus, CASA, "Hello Israel", Oral History Projects, Parents as School Partners, PG 13 Players, Renewal House, Second Harvest Food Bank, Scholarship Loan Fund, Silent Witness, Snack Box Program, Women's Seder, TIP, and Special Advocates for Victims of Violence; and
WHEREAS, the NCJW is playing an increasingly important role in developing, monitoring and advocating on federal, state and local issues; and
WHEREAS, the NCJW, Nashville Section is poised to make even greater contributions during its next century through its outstanding membership; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and commend the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) on September 5, 2001 as "Nashville NCJW" Day.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 100-Year Anniversary of The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Nashville Section.
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to The National Council of Jewish Women.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
