RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-660

A resolution recognizing Dr. Bill Wise upon his retirement from service with the Metropolitan Public School System.

WHEREAS, on June 30, 2001, Dr. Bill Wise, Director of the Metropolitan School System, retired after thirty-one years of faithful service to his employees, colleagues and the citizens of Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wise began his educational career teaching at the middle and high school levels, then moving to the college level before serving the Metropolitan Public School System as assistant superintendent of business and deputy director, then stepping in as interim director in early 1997, later being appointed director in the fall of that same year; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wise, spearheaded the implementation of an upswing in enrollment with dozens of new and renovated schools allowing students to attend class closer to home and helped shaped the School Improvement Plan; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure Dr. Wise saw a school system go through a dual system segregated by race, both in school and busing become unitary, the complete rebuilding of the infrastructure of the school system, the school system reorganized into a single-track, three-tier system for the academic needs of the students, accountability at all levels - students, teachers, principals and Directors of Schools, and to see that the Metropolitan Public School System is fully funded so that all children receive the first-class education that they need and deserve; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wise is to be commended for his timeless efforts for the improvement of educational opportunities for children and will sorely be missed not only as the director but for his leadership in developing innovative programs for the students of our city; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Wise was honored by the Council of the Great City Schools as the first recipient of the "Bill Wise Award" which will be given every year in recognition of an outstanding school business manager who exemplify Dr. Wises ideals of leadership, innovation, commitment and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Dr. Bill Wise for his dedication to Metro schools and his accomplishments during his 31 years of service to education and wish him much happiness in his retirement as he moves forward.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dr. Bill Wise upon his retirement from service with the Metropolitan Public School System.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to prepare a Hand Letter Scroll to be presented to Dr. Bill Wise.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
