RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-612

A resolution recognizing the John Overton High School Marching Band and the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

WHEREAS, almost sixty years ago the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was totally devastated by a surprise attack of Japanese planes and on that fateful morning 1,177 American sailors lost their lives; and

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band has been given the honor of representing the U.S.S. Tennessee Battleship at the 60th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Commemoration and Waikiki Holiday Parade in Hawaii during the dates of November 19-25, 2001; and

WHEREAS, on March 17, 2001, representatives of the John Overton High School Marching Band met with members of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, where the Band Members had a chance to hear firsthand the horrors of war and the event that was "Pearl Harbor"; and

WHEREAS, the Band Members were able to inform the proud veterans of their opportunity to represent them and the Battleship U.S.S. Tennessee by performing at Pearl Harbor this year - the 60th Anniversary of the attack that brought the United States into World War II; and

WHEREAS, on this solemn occasion bands representing ships that were sunk on December 7, 1941, will carry banners identifying the state that they have come from and the battleship named for that state, and a Pearl Harbor survivor will ride in front of each band; and

WHEREAS, the John Overton High School Marching Band is one of only twelve bands participating in this historic event, having been named the State Marching Band Champion of Tennessee five times and having been nationally recognized for their marching excellence; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the John Overton High School Marching Band and the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Survivors of Pearl Harbor as they prepare for the Pearl Harbor, Hawaii 60th Anniversary Commemoration.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:


SECTION 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the John Overton High School Marching Band and the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Survivors of Pearl Harbor.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to representatives of the John Overton High School Marching Band and to representatives of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Survivors of Pearl Harbor.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
