RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-610

A resolution recognizing Dr. Lois Jordan on her many accomplishments.

WHEREAS, Dr. Lois Jordan, often referred to as "Lady Jordan" was the first African American female elected in Metropolitan Nashville City Council serving for one term from 1971 to 1975 in the sixteenth district were she demanded respect, and was noted to do her research prior to taking a position on any legislative matter; and

WHEREAS, not only was Dr. Jordan the first African American female, but the only female serving in the council during her tenure, often referred to as the "Young Maverick"; and

WHEREAS, some of her accomplishments include being published in Who's Who in Black America, Community Leader for Noble American's of Bicentennial Era, and Two-Thousand Women of Achievement in addition other organizations too numerous to mention while also serving on many boards and commissions, such as the American Red Cross, Nashville Symphony Guild, and Board of Trustees for Volunteer State Community College; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Jordan was awarded Woman of the Year by the Negro Business & Professional Women's Club; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Lois Jordan is an educator at Pearl Cohn Comprehensive High School, where she teaches government and American history; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Dr. Lois Jordan on her outstanding work ethic and service to her community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as noting the outstanding accomplishments, achievements and leadership qualities of Dr. Lois Jordan.

SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Lois Jordan.

SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
