RESOLUTION NO. RS2001-602
A resolution recognizing the Nashville Tree Foundation and the Metro Parks/Beautification and Environment Commission on receiving The Year 2001 National Arbor Day "Project Award".
WHEREAS, the Nashville Tree Foundation and the Metro Parks/Beautification and Environment Commission were presented with their award for the ReLeaf Nashville project at the 29th annual national celebration on April 27-28, 2001, in Nebraska City, Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, leaders in tree planting, tree care, conservation, and environmental stewardship are recognized each year by The National Arbor Day Foundation; and
WHEREAS, ReLeaf Nashville was formed by the Nashville Tree Foundation and the Metro Parks/Beautification Environment Commission within days following the April 16, 1998, tornadoes that swept through the area of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County; and
WHEREAS, over 20,000 trees on public and private land were damaged throughout ten neighborhoods and 14 city parks; and
WHEREAS, the ReLeaf Nashville project implemented a comprehensive planting plan for affected neighborhoods and parks, thus far planting over 2,000 trees through the year 2000; and
WHEREAS, not only did the project ReLeaf Nashville win an 2001 National Arbor Day award but received a national merit award from the American Society of Landscape Architects; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the Nashville Tree Foundation and the Metro Parks/Beautification & Environment Commission for their progress in implementing the ReLeaf Nashville project and receiving this award.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Nashville Tree Foundation and the Metro Parks/Beautification and Environment Commission on receiving The Year 2001 National Arbor Day "Project Award".
SECTION 2. The Metropolitan Council Staff Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to Betty Brown President of the Nashville Tree Foundation and Chairwoman of ReLeaf Nashville.
SECTION 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
